David S. Pumpkins found his way into the political spotlight on Halloween night. According to Variety, Tom Hanks returned to “Saturday Night Live” to play the character in a cold open aimed at President Donald Trump’s public remarks.
The sketch took aim at Trump’s increasingly unusual campaign-trail comments and recurring attention to men’s bodies. Saidah Belo-Osagie also appeared as Nicki Minaj, adding a celebrity impersonation to a segment that brought political comedy and Halloween absurdity together.
Hanks’ appearance gave the opener a familiar comic wildcard: rather than keeping its focus squarely on Washington, “SNL” made room for David S. Pumpkins in the middle of its topical satire.
